Hair Loss Consultations
Most people notice hair loss gradually, in a photo, in the shower drain, or in how long it takes to style. By the time it is obvious it has usually been happening for a while, which is why it is worth having the conversation earlier rather than later. Scripted Clinic offers hair loss consultations by phone or video with AHPRA-registered Australian doctors, anywhere in Australia, without a referral.
An online hair loss consultation is a telehealth appointment where you discuss thinning or shedding hair with a doctor by phone or video. At Scripted Clinic an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor reviews your history, asks about the pattern and timing of the change, and agrees a plan with you. No referral is needed.
The point of the consultation is to work out what is actually happening. Hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and several quite different things produce it. Your doctor will ask about the pattern, how quickly it came on, your family history, your general health, any recent illness or major stress, and any medications you take.
The main reason to get assessed
Hair loss has several distinct causes, and they are managed differently. This is the main reason a clinical assessment is worth having before you decide to do anything.
| Pattern | What it usually looks like | Typical context |
|---|---|---|
| Male pattern hair loss | A receding hairline and thinning at the crown, developing gradually over years. | The most common cause in men. Strongly influenced by family history and age. |
| Female pattern hair loss | Widening of the part and general thinning across the top of the scalp, usually keeping the hairline. | The most common cause in women. Often becomes noticeable around hormonal transitions. |
| Telogen effluvium | Diffuse shedding all over, often noticed a few months after the trigger. | Follows illness, surgery, childbirth, significant stress, rapid weight change or a new medication. Frequently temporary. |
| Nutritional or medical causes | Variable, often diffuse thinning. | Iron deficiency, thyroid conditions and some medications can all contribute. These are worth identifying because the underlying cause is treatable. |
| Patchy or scarring hair loss | Discrete bald patches, or redness, scaling or scalp discomfort. | Needs proper clinical assessment. If you have scalp pain, redness or sudden patchy loss, see a doctor promptly rather than waiting. |
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Working out which of these applies to you is what the consultation is for. See healthdirect for general background on hair loss.
Your first appointment
Your first appointment is a conversation, not a prescription. Together you will discuss options, and, if a plan is appropriate for you, your practitioner will explain what it involves and how follow-up works. There is no obligation to proceed.
It helps to have a list of anything you currently take, including over-the-counter supplements, in front of you when you join the call.
Suitability
Worth knowing before you book. Hair grows slowly, so any change takes months to become visible, and the earlier hair loss is assessed the more options tend to be open. Approaches to pattern hair loss generally work by slowing further loss, and maintaining what you have is usually a more realistic goal than restoring what has already gone.
Where hair loss is caused by something identifiable and temporary, such as a recent illness or a nutritional deficiency, addressing the cause is often the most useful thing that can be done.
We are not going to promise you a result on a web page. Your doctor will give you a realistic picture during your consultation, based on your actual assessment.
Pricing
No subscriptions, no lock-in, no upsells. Simple
The price above is for the consultation. If your doctor recommends anything that carries a separate cost, they will explain what it is and what it costs during the appointment, before you decide whether to proceed. See consultation pricing for our other services.
Telehealth hair loss
Our approach
Every consultation is with an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor. You are assessed as an individual, and your doctor will tell you honestly whether this is the right path for you.
We will tell you if we think nothing needs doing, if the likely cause is temporary and will resolve on its own, or if you would be better served by an in-person examination with a dermatologist. Hair loss attracts a lot of marketing and not much straight talk, and we would rather be the clinic that gives you an honest assessment.
We also encourage you to keep your regular GP informed, particularly where hair loss might be connected to something else in your health. Consultations run on a secure platform, and our privacy policy sets out how your information is handled. You can also read how an online consultation works.

No. You can book a hair loss consultation with Scripted Clinic directly. You choose a time and speak with an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor by phone or video.
At Scripted Clinic the consultation is $29, charged once. That covers your history review, an individual assessment with an AHPRA-registered doctor, and an agreed plan. Follow-up consultations are the same price.
The common causes are male and female pattern hair loss, which are gradual and influenced by family history; telogen effluvium, which is diffuse shedding a few months after an illness, major stress, childbirth or rapid weight change; and medical causes such as iron deficiency or thyroid conditions. They are assessed and managed differently, which is why the cause matters.
Hair grows slowly, so months rather than weeks. Your doctor will give you a realistic timeframe during your consultation based on your individual assessment.
For the common patterns, yes. History, pattern, timing and family history carry most of the diagnostic weight. If your doctor thinks you need an in-person examination, for example with sudden patchy loss or a scalp problem, they will tell you and refer you appropriately.
Female pattern hair loss is common and is assessed the same way, with a consultation. It is not suitable to book during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if you are trying to conceive. Speak with your GP in that case.
That is a clinical decision your doctor makes with you after assessing you individually. Australian law does not permit us to advertise prescription medicines or to promise any particular treatment.
Yes. Consultations are available anywhere in Australia. Given how long dermatology waiting lists can be outside the capital cities, telehealth is often the fastest route to a clinical opinion.
Sudden patchy hair loss, or hair loss with scalp pain, redness or scaling, needs an in-person examination. Please see your GP or a dermatologist promptly rather than booking a telehealth consultation.
We encourage you to keep your GP informed, and your doctor can discuss the best way to do that. This matters more with hair loss than people expect, because it can be connected to other things in your health.
